Executive Vice President, UPMC and President UPMC Physician Services

Joon S. Lee, MD, is executive vice president, UPMC, and president, UPMC Physician Services. Dr. Lee is responsible for the University of Pittsburgh Physicians and Community Medicine and its employed physicians and staff. His scope includes physician services, quality of care, patient experience, patient access and financial oversight of physician services. Dr. Lee also oversees physician informatics, pharmacy service line and the Health Services Division relationship to MyUPMC and the UPMC Call Center. He works closely with UPMC’s chief quality officer on Centers of Excellence and other important quality measures related to the care provided by UPMC physicians.

Dr. Lee, associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, previously served as chief of the Division of Cardiology and executive director of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. An interventional cardiologist by training, Dr. Lee’s research and clinical interests include the role of stem cells in the treatment of coronary artery disease, rapid treatment of cardiac emergencies and catheter based therapy for valvular heart disease including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

After earning his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., Dr. Lee then completed a medical internship, residency and chief residency, as well as cardiology fellowship, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 1996 after serving as an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Lee is certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
