James Coons

Professor University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy

James Coons is a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and a clinical pharmacist who specializes in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy at UPMC.

He has been active in clinical practice for over 20 years having managed patients in multiple settings including cardiac intensive care, general cardiology, advanced heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension. He also serves as the PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency Program Director and Associate Fellowship Director for Clinical Pharmacogenomics. Coons is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. He is also a Board-Certified Cardiology Pharmacist.

He serves as an expert advisor on cardiovascular medication-related initiatives and policies for UPMC. He has authored more than 100 manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters and has served as an investigator on several grants.
