Johanna Vidal-Phelan, MD, MBA, FAAP, is the Chief Medical Officer for Quality and Pediatrics at the UPMC Insurance Services Division and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Vidal-Phelan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wellesley College and completed her Doctor of Medicine from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and was awarded the Sidney J. Sussman, MD Award for Academic Excellence in Pediatrics. Dr. Vidal-Phelan completed her General Pediatrics Internship and Residency at the University of Washington Seattle Children’s Hospital and a healthcare-focused master’s in business administration from George Washington University School of Business. In 2022 Dr. Vidal-Phelan graduated from the America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Executive Leadership Program earning the distinction of Certified Healthcare Insurance Executive.

Dr. Vidal-Phelan has over twenty years of experience in clinical practice and has been a thought leader in the field of value-based care, population health, care management and social determinants of health. She is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Pittsburgh American Heart Association, a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. This fall, Dr. Vidal-Phelan joined the Board for The Alliance of Community Health Plans. For her advocacy work during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Vidal-Phelan was awarded the Al Día Top Doctor Award in January 2021 and the 2022 YWCA Heroine Award. For her leadership and contributions to the AHIP Executive Leadership Program, Dr. Vidal-Phelan was awarded the ELP Perkins Wroth Leadership Award in 2022.
