Expert panel discussion features leaders from UPMC, Vanderbilt, NCQA, and Astrata on the future of artificial intelligence for health care

Many health care leaders are excited for the potential of artificial Intelligence (AI) to help their health systems become more efficient and improve care. AI was identified as the technology holding the greatest promise for health care, according to the Top of Mind for Top Health Systems 2021 research.

Despite the potential of AI, there is concern that the technology has so far overpromised and underdelivered for health care.

The Center for Connected Medicine (CCM) hosts an expert panel discussion online to address the future of AI in delivering greater value in health care.

The one-hour online discussion, “The Intersection of Value and AI: Where Machines Can Make a Difference,” features experts from UPMC, Vanderbilt, NCQA, and Astrata. See more about the expert speakers below.

Role of AI in value-based care

This panel discussion is being held as the CCM explores the push toward value-based care and the key role technology is playing in the drive to improve outcomes, lower costs, and boost satisfaction for patients and providers.

The discussion builds on the CCM’s Top of Mind research, which found that half of respondents were using AI in response to the pandemic and 44% were increasing investment and focus on AI because of COVID-19. The CCM wasn’t the only organization to chart an uptick in interest in AI in response to COVID. Optum released survey findings in November 2020 showing that 56% of health care stakeholders are accelerating or expanding their AI deployment timelines in response to the pandemic.

The discussion also asks how machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) can accelerate the shift to value by measuring more of what matters. Harnessing those technologies to analyze outcomes for individuals and across populations could provide real-time quality feedback that drives improvements in care across health systems and reduces health disparities.
